GENESIS

Dreams of Gdynia grow from the imagination. The one that allowed us to build the city from scratch a hundred years ago, and the one that helps us think about its future. The starting point is Julian Rummel's vision from 1934: utopian, bold, designing Gdynia as a modern, open, and good place to live.

WHAT KIND OF GDYNIA

Art here becomes a space for experiment — a place to test different scenarios, imagine what does not yet exist, and observe what is already changing. It does not provide ready-made answers, but opens up a field for thought, doubt, and conversation.

ARTISTS

"Dreams of Gdynia" consists of works by nearly 40 artists.
Most of them were created especially
for this exhibition. Their sensitivity acts here like a seismograph, capturing the tensions, changes, and non-obvious processes that shape the modern city.

In addition to artists associated with Gdynia and the Tricity, there are also people from outside the region. These two perspectives — rooted
and distanced — meet, creating a polyphonic story
about the city seen both
from the inside and the outside.

“Dreams of Gdynia” stem from imagination — the kind that a hundred years ago allowed us to build a city from scratch, and the kind that helps us think
about its future. The starting point is Julian Rummel's vision from 1934: utopian, bold, designing Gdynia as a modern, open, and good place to live.

We return to it on the city's centenary,
to ask the question: what kind of Gdynia do we dream of today?

About the festival

Scattered across the space of Śródmieście, the exhibition leads through various threads: from contemporary challenges, through the city's relationship with nature, to its histories, myths, and possible futures.

Each of these perspectives attempts to capture what is invisible at first glance — challenges, fears, desires, and imaginations.

IDEA

Dreams of Gdynia are also an attempt to look at the images that have shaped our thinking about the city over the years — its histories, myths, and narratives that we constantly return to. They create a common point of reference, but they can also limit our imagination.

EDUCATION

The project is also developing beyond the exhibition itself. Educational activities, walks, workshops, and debates become tools for collective reflection — a way to pause for a moment and ask how we want to live and what kind of Gdynia we want to co-create.

DISCUSSION

Dreams of Gdyni therefore propose a shift — not by rejecting the past, but by looking at it from a new perspective. Perhaps that is precisely when — when we momentarily stop repeating what we already know so well — space opens up for something else.
