Blanka Byrwa

A designer working at the intersection of art, science, and ecology. She specializes in creating biomaterials from Baltic algae, and in her practice, she combines artistic activities with environmental education and social engagement around the protection of the Baltic Sea.
Author of the "Glony" (Algae) project - a series of exhibitions, workshops, and performances presented, among others, at Gdynia Design Days (2022, 2023), eskaem Gallery, GAK Stacja Orunia, the Design Institute in Kielce, CSW Łaźnia, and BGSW Słupsk. Curator of the exhibitions "Odpady" (Waste, 2023) and "Bioplastico?" (2024), and co-author of the "3XO - Out of Office" project dedicated to circular design. She created a biomural from local catering waste (Traffic Design Biennale 2022). She is developing this theme in the Seatizens Biomurals project (PartArt4OW, Horizon Europe), implemented in Gdańsk Brzeźno.
Recipient of the Gdańsk Cultural Scholarship, under which she realized the work "Gniazdo Szerszeni" (Hornets' Nest) - about paper recycling and bio-adaptation. Creator of the Teodora Award statuette (2025) - a project that initiated collaboration with the Kashubian master basket weaver Czesław Hinc and led to the formation of the informal group Wikliniary, uniting female designers, architects, and artists learning traditional weaving techniques. As the president of the CUMY Foundation (2019-2022), she co-founded the Makerspace in the Gdańsk Shipyard, implementing, among others, the projects "Projekt Stocznia" and "reTrylinka".
