Katarzyna Swinarska

Artist photo

Visual artist: painter, creator of videos and multimedia installations. Graduate of the Faculty of Painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk, where in 2014 she received her PhD in Fine Arts.

In her work, she consistently explores the female experience, drawing inspiration from family, historical, and contemporary narratives. Her works are characterized by a bold approach to female sexuality and corporality, combining stereotypically feminine traits with those that still lack cultural acceptance.

A multiple laureate and finalist of art competitions. She has realized numerous solo exhibitions in Poland, Switzerland, Austria, Belarus, and Germany. Her works are held in institutional collections (including NOMUS in Gdańsk, PGS in Sopot, and the Wyspa Institute of Art) as well as private collections in Poland, Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Sweden, Spain, Italy, the United States, and Saudi Arabia.

We invite you to watch Katarzyna Swinarska's film trilogy "Predatory Hearts", inspired by the dichotomous nature of the female artist's desire, which seeks fulfillment in the specifically female sphere and in art. "Predatory Hearts" are hearts hungry for love, yearning for extreme emotions accessible to women, but also seeking aesthetic and intellectual experiences — insatiable hearts. The first two parts of "Predatory Hearts", dedicated to artist mothers and artists who, for various reasons, do not have children, were awarded the Grand Prix of the Gdańsk Biennale of Art 2023. The third and final part of "Predatory Hearts" is dedicated to mature female artists, as those who know the answer to the question: "Which is more important: art or love?". To Swinarska's surprise, it is the protagonists of the third part of "Predatory Hearts" who speak most boldly about their experience of love and sexuality.
