Tewu

Tewu is one of the most interesting and elusive street artists in Poland. A sculptor by education – a graduate of the Faculty of Sculpture and Intermedia at the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk, where he defended his diploma in the studio of Prof. Stanisław Radwański. For years, he has been carrying out his projects in public spaces – most often in an unofficial way, without permits or announcements.
Tewu is an artistic partisan. His sculptures appear at night in unexpected places: on quays, walls, facades, and elements of urban infrastructure. Installed by the artist using existing elements of the surroundings, they function on the borderline of legality and performance. For some, it is a gesture of artistic courage, for others – a provocation. For Tewu, it is a way of contacting the world – without intermediaries or invitations, he addresses the passer-by directly, confronting them with a work situated in a familiar and tamed public space.
Although Tewu's works are vulnerable to destruction or theft, they have gained the status of urban symbols – inscribed in the landscape of Gdynia, as well as Kaunas, Bratislava, or Belgrade, and have become an integral part of urban culture. Deprived of authorial or curatorial commentary, the sculptures evoke strong, unexpected emotions in many viewers. Sometimes the works disappear and return, occasionally on the initiative of the residents themselves. The artist treats this as a natural stage in the life of a sculpture – the moment when the work slips out of the author's control and begins its own history.
From the very beginning of his artistic activity, Tewu has avoided publicity and does not comment on his works, leaving their interpretation to the audience. Despite this, his projects gain wide resonance and are eagerly commented on in the media and on the internet. The artist is also involved in charity work, donating his works to auctions supporting various social initiatives.
