Marcin Zawicki

Marcin Zawicki (born 1985) is a visual artist working primarily in the field of painting and spatial forms, and the creator of monumental sculptural works and set designs.
Zawicki's work, rooted in the spirit of realism, refers to the problems of painterly ontology and explores the relationship between reality and its visual representation. The key lies in the artist's specific creative method: Zawicki's paintings are created on the basis of small models he builds - miniature three-dimensional worlds, postmodern still lifes, or anthropomorphic figures, which he then transfers to canvases, often of large format.
In search of contemporary forms of painterly expression, he employs the traditional technique of oil painting, making no secret of his roots in the tradition of old art. However, the content of Zawicki's works refers to current issues, touching upon the broadly understood problems of late capitalism, as well as ecological themes and the decline of the Anthropocene.
Born in 1985 in Szczecin. He graduated from the Faculty of Painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk in 2010, where, after receiving his PhD (2015) and habilitation (2021), he works as a university professor. Laureate of many competitions, including the STRABAG ART Award (2021), the Kazimierz Ostrowski Award (2023), the Theatre Award of the City of Gdańsk (2023). Recipient of the Gdańsk Cultural Scholarship CREATIVE FUND 2025, participant of dozens of group and solo exhibitions. He lives and works in Gdańsk.
